The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has released its 2018 report “An Assessment of Minority Voting Rights Access in the United States.” Commission Chair Catherine E. Lhamon said that the report “reflects the reality that citizens in the United States –across many states, not limited only to some parts of the country –continue to suffer significant, and profoundly unequal, limitations on their ability to vote. That stark reality denigrates our democracy and diminishes our ideals.” The report includes a history of minority voter suppression, the impact of the Supreme Court’s Shelby County v. Holder decision, recent changes in voting laws and procedures that impact minority voters, data on voter registration, turnout and discrimination, and an evaluation of recent Department of Justice’s enforcement efforts.
