Black August is an annual commemoration and prison-based holiday to remember Black political prisoners, Black freedom struggles in the United States and beyond, and to highlight Black resistance against racial, colonial and imperialist oppression. It takes place during the entire calendar month of August.
Angela Dodson, former senior editor for the New York Times and long-time Trenton resident, and panelists will speak about the essays collected in her edited book, We Refuse to Be Silent: Women’s Voices on Justice for Black Men, published in 2024. The essays provide the perspectives of more than thirty-five accomplished women writers on the injustices and dangers Black men face daily in a world that often stereotypes and targets them.
