Making Electrification Equitable

May 18, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

Electrification of residential single and multi-family homes as well as commercial buildings is a crucial step in meeting our climate goals, but how can industry leaders ensure that the transition to clean energy is an equitable one? This course will be taught by Jamal Lewis, Director of Policy Partnerships and Equitable Electrification from Rewiring America, and Daphany Rose Sanchez, Executive Director of Kinetic Community Consulting, will discuss why electrification is essential to decarbonization and how communities like Princeton and beyond can lead a just, clean energy transition. Several case studies will be presented highlighting the health, safety, and welfare aspects associated with equity and the movement to utilize sustainable energy in structures.

Goals:

  • Understand the challenges to electrifying our buildings and how to overcome them
  • Understand how sustainability/electrification of buildings has been used as a barrier to providing affordable housing and strategies to overcome that barrier
  • Understand ways we can ensure those with the greatest energy burden do not bear the greatest impact of the move to electrification
