Removing Barriers to Civic Engagement for African Americans

February 5, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

Trent House Association immediate past president, Dr. Princess Hoagland will inform and inspire us as she describes the results of her research in Trenton and shares ideas for a stronger democracy.

Taking part in community decision-making through voting and other political activities is an important responsibility and privilege of American citizens. But some are denied this opportunity for civic engagement, have been discouraged from exercising their rights, or are alienated from political life as a force for positive change.

Dr. Princess Hoagland offers examples from the in-depth interviews she conducted with African American residents of Trenton of the barriers to their engagement in civic and political life. She draws on experience as a community activist and in-depth study to identify both root causes of these barriers and strategies to overcome them. Her talk will inspire listeners to consider how they participate in the civic life of their communities and what actions they might take to support civic engagement for all citizens.
