Attiya Latif, a Jefferson Scholar at the University of Virginia, recently published an Open Letter to Allies in response to Sandra Bland’s death.
We must work to combat the framework of oppression built into America’s society through awareness, through using our voices, through banding together and becoming active in our demands for justice, tolerance, and equality. We need to give urgency to the rights of Black people.

A powerful message about taking responsibility and addressing one’s truth. Lacey strongly emphasized the need to become vulnerable to ask the hard questions. Her mother’s honestly about her naivety spoke volumes to the mindset of race relations in 1968 and the danger of crossing the color lines. Her father taught me that love prevails, even betrayal…
Outstanding example of the human heart, even when broken can move forward… Thank you Lacey and your family for the honest dialogue…
