In his review (Esquire, Dec 12, 2016) of the soon to be released documentary I Am Not Your Negro by Raoul Peck, based on an unfinished Baldwin manuscript, Remember This House, Manuel Betancourt remarks that “white identity is the most insidious precisely because it doesn’t think of itself as one. As James Baldwin once famously put it, ‘White is a way to describe power.’ ”
