A photo essay “Let’s Talk About Race” by photographer Chris Buck that is featured in O, the Oprah Magazine‘s May 2017 issue on race, included “three photos that flipped stereotypical tropes on their heads . . . [and] depict a complex conversation about race, class and power among women.”

The photo essay is an excellent opportunity for all people to see how we self-identify with those social roles imposed upon us through a narrow lens. These compelling characters depictions play out in movies as natural hierarchical order placing stereotypes about other cultures as servants and those born to serve White people. This is purposeful, so when White people and other ethnic groups meet someone that does not fit these limited categories the person becomes the exception to the rule as though there exist an actual rule to break. I hope that people seriously consider the brainwashing of human value and self-worth. Wake up, people!
