Following the Continuing Conversation about Nationalism vs. Patriotism on July 2, Joyce Trotman-Jordan, Not in Our Town board member, wrote the following:

I was a freshman in college when I realized for the first time this holiday was not for me. I felt a strong sense of betrayal, frustration and anger. Liberty and justice for whom?

My ancestors were in bondage at the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We were not free, we had no rights, we were considered chattel.
